If you’ve read Sweet Mary Louise for a little while, you may have noticed that I tend to take “breaks” from my blog and some of you may even call it a hiatus. Whenever I take a step back from blogging, it’s usually because my life gets bogged down by work or I’m in a bit of a creative rut. Life happens. But what does get frustrating for me is that I allow myself to put my blog on the back burner. What’s frustrating about that is blogging is an outlet for me. I enjoy it. When life gets in the way it’s easy for me to say I won’t post this week which can then turn into months and then it gets easier to not post because it’s already been a while, what’s another week?
Another thing that is frustrating for me is when people actually tell me they miss my posts or make a comment about how they haven’t seen anything posted on SML. It’s frustrating to me because that is a small reminder that although this blog started as a personal blog for me to write about whatever I wanted and whenever I wanted has sort of turned into something bigger and something other people enjoy. I get disappointed because I know that when someone lands themselves on my blog and haven’t seen anything updated in weeks, that’s my fault.
But don’t get me wrong. I don’t blog to appease the demand of everyone else but I do appreciate seeing my readership slowly grow over the years and how this blog has grown in so many ways. Again, I hate that I allow myself to let this blog be the thing I put on the back burner when I should really make the decision to keep this a priority when things get hard because a lot of the time it acts as my escape. How in the world do the mommas that have jobs and a beautiful blog and Instagram do it?? I definitely need a page out of their book.
Another thing that is tough as a blogger is consistently finding inspiration and creative content that doesn’t get redundant. In the blogging community, I would say fashion and beauty posts can get a bit saturated and honestly the content starts to blend. It’s tough to find the gray area of maintaining your own voice/brand but also satisfying what your audience would want to read. So one thing I’ve had to really focus on is when I lose the spark of creativity and what to do then? Where do I turn? Those aren’t easy questions to answer but I can say that one thing I do is I use other people’s blogs as inspiration and think about how I would’ve reviewed a specific product differently and which direction I would’ve taken it in. And I also ask myself which posts I enjoy reading the most and why?
A few bloggers that I absolutely love and turn to a lot for inspiration are Julia Dzafic from Lemon Stripes, Carly Heitlinger from The College Prepster, and Brittany Fullwood from Hello Honey Blog. It’s easy to relate to them and feel that they’re speaking directly to you. They also have beautiful photos to make their platforms visually appealing. Yes, they use professional photographers…but they also started somewhere, too!
Another way I find inspiration is actually emptying my mind and zoning out on an activity. Whether that’s going on a long walk by myself, listening to a Spotify playlist I wouldn’t normally listen to, or browsing the web for the latest trends. Style, music, and food trends are constantly evolving and it’s important to keep up to keep content relevant but also keep it relatable.
One thing I will say is that I am SO excited for the coming holiday season. I’ve already found so much inspiration for Fall and Winter style and decor that I am excited to share. But while the subject of content is on the table, I’d like to know what you would prefer to see from me. What subject do you particularly like to see? Is it fashion? Is is beauty? Is it home decor? I’d love to hear which you prefer so that I can make sure to make it a focus. I love ALL of those things so no matter what it’s a win-win for me.
Leave a comment down below of what you want to see from SML and I hope to make that a focus. Regardless, I am prioritizing a lot of things and making a different list of how I should prioritize my time. I am excited to see where this blog will go now that I have a focus to keep it towards the top of my priorities. We all need an outlet for creativity and Sweet Mary Louise is that for me. I’m excited for this coming holiday season and all the fun stuff that includes along the way.
